The Twelve Caesars. Paris, François-Louis Schmied, 1928. In-4 (28 x 18.5 cm), brown morocco with horizontal brown band at foot, smooth mute spine, gold moiré silk lining and black moiré silk endpapers, gilt edges, covers and spine preserved, folder and slipcase (F. L. S.). Edition decorated with 23 compositions by François-Louis Schmied, most of them out-of-text, wood-engraved in color by him and printed under his direction. Limited edition of 175 numbered copies on Arches wove paper, this one no. 123, signed by Schmied. Enriched with 16 woodcuts on fine Japanese paper, for the decomposition of two figures. Provenance: > Exbrayat (illustrated bookplate with the motto "Liber - Libertas") > Maurice Houdayer Collection > Private collection, Paris Condition report: Very slight woodwear. A very fine copy. An iconic book for interwar bibliophiles, often associated with Jouve or Dunand, Schmied offers here a classic of Western literature enhanced by a sober binding.
