First edition dated 1651 of this two-hemisphere world map by Sanson d'Abbeville, engraved by Rivière, first published separately and later as an atlas. California is depicted as an island. The map is one of the first to identify the Great Lakes, as the five were not named until Sanson's 1656 map of New France. Based largely on Jesuit reports, Lac Supérieur and Lac des Puans (are introduced here. Australia is only partially represented. - Shirley, World 390.
