Achille Vianelli
Achille Vianelli (1803 Porto Maurizio - Benevento 1894), Arch of Trajan of Benevento.
Pen and brown ink, brown wash over preparatory drawing in pencil, on buff wove paper. 1840. 22 x 31.1 cm. Signed lower left. Inscribed and dated "arco Trajano Benevento (...) 1840" lower right.
A typical example of Vianelli's studies in monochrome brown tones. The Italian landscape painter was a co-founder of the "Scuola di Posillipo", a school of painting in Naples that rejected the academic studio painting that prevailed in the late 18th century and turned to plein-air painting. He captured the Roman Arch of Honor in Benevento with its frieze full of figures in several studies. - Paper somewhat darkened and faint brown staining along the edges of the sheet. The lower right corner replaced. In good condition.
Provenance: Private collection, Southern Germany.
Taxation: Differential taxation (VAT: Margin Scheme).
