Nordfranzösisch

Northern French , pictorial initial A with the depiction of St. Lawrence. Opaque color with gold leaf, pen in black or brown and gold color, heightened in white, on vellum. (First quarter of the 16th century). 9.8 x 9.1 cm. Detail from a French antiphonary, with the inscription lower left: "Lespieu de S. Barnabe cede icy a la grille de S. Laurent". Verso with faintly visible broad stave lines in red. The large distance of 18 mm between the staves suggests that this must have been a large choir book. - Mounted on vellum on all sides. A small rubbing at the top center, otherwise flawless and of great color freshness. Provenance: Sam Fogg, London, acquired there from the previous owner; by succession private property, Southern Germany. Taxation: taxed on a differential basis (VAT: Margin Scheme).
