HENRI III 1574 - 1589 Golden shield with Sun (4th type royal title on cross side) 1588 X = Amiens. (3.35 g) ♦ Dy 1121B Special type for this workshop. Short blank. T.B. Louis XIII. After the issue of the penultimate gold ecu with the Sun, a new reform was needed to eliminate the Spanish "pistole" so dear to Molière, notably in Les Fourberies de Scapin. In 1640, Louis XIII created the louis d'or, weighing two écus of the old system but with 22 carats of fine gold (916°/°°), the title of the Spanish pistole. Jean Warin (1604-1672), an engraver from Liège, instituted the use of pendulum coinage at the Monnaie du Moulin de Paris in the Louvre. An artist of universal renown, he produced these remarkable engravings
