Igor MITORAJ (1944-2014). Asclepios. Bronze with green patina, signed on the front and numbered 0795/1000 HC on the back, standing on a travertine base. Height 37.5 cm - Width: 27.5 cm Total height: 48 cm Of Polish origin, Igor Mitoraj has lived between Paris and Italy. Represented in a number of museums, he is also renowned for his monumental public statuary, notably in Paris (La Défense), Angers (Musée des Beaux-Arts forecourt), Rome (Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri), London (Canada Square) and Lausanne (Olympic Museum Park). An Igor Mitoraj Foundation Museum opened in Pietrasanta in 2022. Mythological themes and antiquity are one of his main sources of inspiration, as in this bust of Asclepios. A Greco-Roman divinity of medicine and son of Apollo, he was struck down by Zeus for attempting to raise the dead. Echoing this great myth, the sculptor renders the classical grace of the thaumaturge god and truncates it to evoke the fragility of existence.
