"I have inherited jointly with my two brothers, Abbé Barbey d'Aurevilly and M. Barbey du Motel, the property left by our late father, M. Théophile Barbey, proprietor of Saint-Sauveur le Vicomte. Our divisions are still to be made [...] and we are determined not to hasten the sale of our father's house and lands [...]". Barbey requests a mortgage of 4,000 francs, and asks for details of the route of the railroad to Coutances, which has been decided, and whether it will pass through his meadows "situated at the exit of the village of Saint-Sauveur [...]". Otherwise I would have accepted your invitation with an eagerness equal to the pleasure it gives me [...]".
