Small in-12, garnet, Jansenist morocco, gilt title on spine, interior lace, gilt edges (Huser). First edition of Histoire du chevalier des Grieux & de Manon Lescaut, which forms the seventh and final volume of Mémoires d'un homme de qualité. This brief love story, in many ways scandalous, published anonymously in Holland and condemned to fire in France, soon established itself as one of our purest narratives. During Prévost's lifetime, it went through 23 editions (Jean Sgard, in En français dans le texte, n°144). Some light foxing, some leaves a little trimmed short, but no damage to the text.
