Cohen/Ricci 436 - Fürstenberg 122 and 205 - Leemann-van Elck 699 - Sander 780 - Splendid Didot impression on good paper, the copperplates printed in colors before the numbering. - The frontispiece with the bust of Gessner (and a small memorial stone with the translator's name) was engraved by Colibert, the splendid images for the five cantos by him, Clément and Casenave. - The copperplates printed purely in color before the script ("avant les numeros des pages"). "The publisher Defer de Maisonneuve published a series of precious illustrated books from 1791 onwards. Their color engravings, however, were not produced by multi-plate printing, but from a single plate in stipple printing after the English model. The best known of these are Florian's Galatee and Gessner's Mort d'Abel" (Lex. des Buchwesens). "The color engraving imported from England and brought to the highest technical and artistic perfection in France experienced only a brief flowering in the field of book illustration during the nineties in a small number of splendid publications produced in limited editions by the publisher Defer der Maisonneuve, which found no successors in their time" (cat. Furstenberg p. 88). - Wide-margined edition, rarely somewhat stained, altogether a good copy. With frontispiece and find color engraved plates after Monsiau. Magnificent Didot print on good paper, the copper in color printed before the numbering. - Halfcoatskin with gilded fillets, rich spine guilding and brown spine label - Broad margined edition only rarely minimally stained, altogether a good copy.
