Set of 14 reptiles; 20th century. Patinated gilded bronze. One has an onyx base. Measurements: 13 x 24 x 15.5 cm (larger); 8.5 x 3 cm (smaller). During the nineteenth and twentieth century the animal-themed sculpture will finally reach its own status, within the context of romantic sculpture. Seeking to break away from the classical sculptural ideal, many artists saw in the animal theme a new way of expression, linked to the emotional and irrational nature, in a purely romantic sense.
