GASTINNE RENETTE in Paris Pair of dueling pistols with damascened octagonal barrels marked "Gastinne Renette à Paris" in gold letters on the upper side. Back plate finely engraved and chased with foliage and signed by the harquebusier. Engraved hammer, fingering trigger guard and pommel. Adjustable trigger. Circa 1850 Minor oxidation. Length: 42.5 cm. In a red velvet-covered posterior presentation box with accessories: red copper powder flask decorated with the Farnese Hercules and brass measuring spout, mallet, bullet mold, cleaning rods, primer boxes. Box dimensions: 53 x 35 x 11 cm Note: Established in 1812 next to the Champs-Elysées traffic circle, Gastine-Rénette specializes in the production of dueling pistols. The high quality of the mechanisms and the care taken with finishing and ornamentation endowed these luxurious weapons with a reputation that would last for over a century. Under the Second Empire, the gunsmith bore the title of Gunner Harquebusier to the Emperor, the Imperial Prince, the Queen and the King of Spain. These weapons are part of every duel, including in literature. In Bel-Ami, Maupassant teams Georges Duroy with this famous gunsmith.
