Wooden casket in Tramp Art, around 1900 Rectangular wooden casket with hand-carved surface in "Tramp Art". The sides and lid are decorated with multi-layered applications of notched carved strips with velvet inlays, as well as floral brass fittings. In the center of the lid is the fitting of a lion's head with a ring for opening. The interior is lined with paper printed with gold paint in a floral motif. There is a lock on the front, the key is missing. Measures approx. 25.5 x 17 x 14 cm. With clear signs of age and use, velvet on the lid rubbed and stained, wood with cracks. Tramp art is an artisanal art movement whose origins cannot be clearly determined. It became popular between 1870 and 1940, particularly in the USA. Various geometric patterns are carved in several layers, mainly from old, discarded cigar boxes or wooden crates, using the simplest tools such as a penknife. The edges are finished with the notch cut characteristic of Tramp Art. Mainly small objects such as picture frames or boxes, but also large pieces of furniture are made from the small wooden panels.
