Description

JEAN-CHARLES DEVELLY (PARIS 1783-1849 SEVRES) Set of eight preparatory drawings for the small medallions of the "guéridon gothique", also called "guéridon de la Création" or "guéridon du Paradis perdu de Milton", in black ink and white highlights, with handwritten annotations, numbered 1 - 2 - 4 - 7 - 8 - 9 - 10 - 12, a pencil drawing on the reverse of projects no. 7 and 12. Charles X period, circa 1829. Dimensions: 18.5 x 17 cm In 1829, Alexandre Brongniart commissioned Jean-Charles Develly to create the medallions for a large polygonal pedestal table in the Gothic style, while the painter Leloy designed the ornaments featuring Gothic columns, ogives and porticos. The scenes illustrate Milton's Paradise Lost. The large central medallion, whose preparatory drawing by Develly is still preserved in the archives of the Manufacture de Sèvres, depicts Adam and Eve among the animals in Paradise. It is surrounded by twelve medallions in grisaille in the manner of Limoges enamels, whose subjects are taken from each song "until the moment when the Angel chasing Adam and his wife announces that Paradise is lost to them". The pedestal table was completed in December 1829, when it entered the Sèvres factory's sales warehouse at a price of 9,000 francs, with Develly receiving 2,000 francs for his work (Arch. Sèvres Pb7). It was presented at the Exposition des Produits des Manufacture in January 1830, then purchased by King Louis-Philippe on June 10, 1831 (Arch. Sèvres, Vbb8, f° 155v). The guéridon, now in a private collection, featured in the exhibition Un Age d'or des Arts décoratifs 1814-1848, Grand Palais, October 10-December 30 1991, no. 73, pp. 182-184.
