French school circa 1800 Presumed portrait of Antoine Barnave, Dauphiné deputy to the Assemblée Nationale in 1789 and elected president on October 24, 1790. Oil on canvas, restorations. 93.5 x 76 cm. An eloquent orator, he was one of the deputies sent to bring the royal family back to Paris after the flight to Varennes. Beginning a correspondence with Marie-Antoinette, he joined the constitutional monarchists of the Club des Feuillants, for which he was accused of treason.
