E.B. French school of the late eighteenth century. "Infantry camp of the National Guard during the French Revolution, circa 1790". Large pen and watercolor drawing, monogrammed at bottom. 22 x 40 cm. Framed under glass. A.B.E. (Freckles) Circa 1790. This watercolor depicts a National Guard military encampment under the constitutional monarchy circa 1790. The garb worn, although similar to that later regulated for the revolutionary line infantry, is modeled on that of the Paris National Guard and often adopted by other cities, with white ruching and facings with scarlet piping. The civilian couple with child in the foreground is also fashionable for the late 1780s and early 1790s.
