BARNAVE (Antoine). Autograph letter signed. GRENOBLE, March 23, 1792. One p. 1/2 in-4. "M. Fallot,... adjudant in the National Guard of this city, being ready to leave to apply to you for a place in the line troops, has asked me to write to you on his behalf. The universal esteem in which he is held, and the particular recommendation of the commander of his battalion, have determined me to give him this letter. In addition to his personal qualities, he has the advantage of knowing the service perfectly, and far from needing to be instructed, he is in a position to instruct others. If, when he presents himself to you,... the appointment is not yet complete, you will oblige me greatly by being willing to include him, and you will make an excellent acquisition for the corp[s] he will join...". ONE OF THE LEADERS OF THE PREREVOLUTIONARY MOVEMENT IN DAUPHINE (1788), ONE OF THE GREAT SPEAKERS OF THE ÉTATS GENERAUX AND LA CONSTITUANTE, LAWYER ANTOINE BARNAVE (1761-1793) was also one of the founders of the Jacobin Club and later the Feuillants Club, but was guillotined under the Terror. He left an important work, Introduction à la Révolution française, in which he was one of the first to explain events in terms of social and economic causes.
