Simonsen - Sylt

Simonsen - Sylt - Collection of approx. 360 glass negatives with views of the North Sea island of Sylt, photographed by Hans Julius Simonsen (1876-1943). Around 1920-45, mostly 9 x 14.5 cm, a few 12.5 x 17.5 cm and 6 x 9 cm. In 27 contemporary cardboard boxes of various brands, mostly with handwritten titles on the sides (boxes somewhat bumped, some stained) - From the archive of Hans Julius Simonsen, who documented the countryside and towns of northern Germany as postcard motifs in a professional photographic manner on numerous trips. Simonsen mostly chose characteristic local buildings, street views and landscapes from the surrounding area as his motifs. One photo studio soon became many, such as in Heiligenhafen, Burg auf Fehmarn, Dahme, Kellenhusen, Travemünde and others, in order to better fulfill the wishes of bathers during the season. Soon a 'Graphische Kunstanstalt' was founded in Oldenburg, which led to the creation of the 'Kunstverlag Simonsen' from the photo studio. Simonsen's son Hans began working for the publishing house in the mid-1920s and continued to run it after his father's death in 1943. At the end of the 1950s, the publishing house and postcard distribution were discontinued and only a photo studio in Oldenburg and the print shop in Lensahn remained.- With views of Westerland (approx. 180 plates), Keitum (approx. 50 plates) and Kampen (130 plates) as well as a further approx. 30 film negatives.- The plates variously stained or scratched, mostly only slightly silvered at the edge, 1 plate with glued crack, 1 plate with corner break.
