Sammlung Fotografien Schifffahrt

Marine collection of approx. 300 photographs of wrecked, stranded ships. Mostly around 1925-1941. Inscribed and dated on the verso, mostly by one hand, mostly with stamp or blindstamp of the shipping company and the photo studio. Approx. 6 x 9 cm to 24 x 30 cm - The photographs show various accidental damage to a wide variety of ships. Ship name, shipping company and cause of damage noted on verso, usually several photos available for one case. The photographs in various formats were provided by the applicants to Captain Georg H. Sievers, who worked as an expert for the Verein Hamburger Assecuradeure, for examination.- Among the applicant shipping companies and shipyards Sartori & Berger, the Howaldtwerft, RDM in Rotterdam, Sturm in Stettin, the Deutsche Ost-Afrika-Linie, F. Laeisz, Arnold Bernstein, etc. The cause of the damage is listed in most cases as "damage". In most cases, collisions are given as the cause of damage (usually with the name of the party involved in the accident), but the notes 'stranded', 'ran aground' and 'capsized' as well as 'fire on board' also occur, as well as 'broken rudder', 'voyage damage' or even 'war damage'.
