Model of the Cuirassé "Richelieu" in metal on a wooden base in a glass display case, on the base is a plaque with the engraving "Des amis du Musée de la Marine". H. 32 cm L. Display case 93 cm Created in 1935 as France's answer to the Italian Littorio class, the Richelieu class was based on its immediate predecessors, the Dunkerque-class battleships. In 1940, while at the Brest naval base, she narrowly escaped the German advance and sailed to Dakar. In 1943, she crossed the Atlantic to New York for a refit and modernization. She then operated in the North Sea and Indian Ocean for the British-led Free French from 1943 to 1945. Retired from the French Navy on September 30, 1967 and renamed Q432, she was sold in 1968 to the Genoese shipbreaker Cantion Navali Santa Maria.
