Model of a transatlantic liner in painted metal, clockwork, details of three stacks, lifeboats, masts, railings ... Circa 1923-1925 H. 41 cm L. 97 cm Model of the Steamship SS Imperator/RMS Berengaria (model no. 10/334/16, 1922-1923). The SS Imperator was a German transatlantic liner built for the Hamburg American Line (Hapag), launched in 1912. At the time of her completion in June 1913, she was the world's largest passenger ship in terms of gross tonnage, surpassing the new White Star liner, RMS "Olympique". The Imperator was the first of a trio of Hamburg America liners, including the SS Vaterland (later the American liner SS Leviathan) and the SS Bismarck (later the White Star liner SS Majestic), all of which were seized as World War I reparations. The Imperator served for 14 months on HAPAG's transatlantic route until the outbreak of the First World War. After the war, she was briefly assigned to the U.S. Navy as USS Imperator (ID-4080) and employed as a transport ship bringing U.S. troops home from Europe. The Imperator was then handed over to the British Cunard Line as part of war reparations, due to the loss of the RMS Lusitania. She sailed as their flagship, renamed RMS Berengaria, for the next 20 years. According to William H. Miller, she was considered one of the finest British liners of the 1920s and 1930s.
