Description

"Napoleons Fame - La Gloire de Napoléon" (Napoleon's Fame) Original engraving with polychrome watercolor highlights whose image is inspired by an engraving by Ivan Terebeniov and repeating his caption and description "Попалась впросак!". Русской солдат штыком снял с нее маску, Козак нагайкою все венцы ее лавровые отхлестал, а Вавила Мороз и огромную трубу ее заткнул снегом - Here you are taken! The soldier removes his mask with his bayonet, the Cossack destroys the laurel wreath with his nagaika, and the peasant Vavila Grandfroid plugs his great trunk with snow." Napoleon's glory is depicted in a winged female body, dressed in a bee-patterned garment and standing on a pile of human bones; beneath the mask appears a demon's face, whose tail appears beneath the garment; on the left, her hand holds the tattered laurel wreath, vigorously struck by the Cossack, on the right are the Russian soldier and the peasant who mischievously prepares his pieces of snow. Publication dated May 18, 1813, by H. Humphrey, London, St James Street. H. 26 x W. 37 cm.
