Description

École française de la fin du XVIIIe siècle.

Rare colored etching, captioned at the top: "Mrs. Delaunay Flexelles Berthier Foulon et les deux Gardes du Corps cherchent a rendre aux Champs Elisées mais Caron repond ensuite leur en bas." And below: "Having become the mortal enemies of the Nation through your treasons, and having so justly deserved death, you still dare to present yourselves to request passage to the Champs Elisées, which is the haven reserved for pure souls and innocent victims. Your souls must remain wandering on the banks of the Stique, just as your bodies have remained unburied; I am going to take Sr François Boulanger to the place reserved for him, to enjoy with his brothers and the unfortunate Calas the happiness they have all deserved. Unsigned, circa 1789. H. 25 x W. 39.5 cm.
