Description

ANTONIO CANOVA (1757-1822), sculpteur.

L.A.S. in Italian entitled "Convoi de la Statue colossale" and dated May 4, 1810 in Rome. Addressed to a certain "ghiavissimo Signore", it deals with the moving of the statue commissioned by Napoleon and depicting him as "Mars disarmed and peacemaker", created in Rome between 1802 and 1806, delivered to Paris and seen by the Emperor in 1811. He states that he has taken note of the Emperor's indeclinable wishes concerning the statue, and that he will scrupulously follow the instructions given. He is already assembling the parts of the colossus, with all possible zeal. The rest will depend on M. Hereaux's orders...
