"Madame et chère soeur, je m'hâte de vous témoigner toute ma joye de la campagne miraculeuse que lempereur a fait en huit jours. Nothing can equal the satisfaction of the people of Lucca. They love the Emperor and regard him as their sovereign. They also cherish Josephine. Believe madame and dear sister that I lose no opportunity to recall the friendship you have always shown me and of which you have often given me proof. I love you not as the Emperor's wife, but as a friend to whom I am only too happy to give proof. Please allow my dear sister the Prince de Lucqes to offer you his deepest respect.
