After studying architecture in Madrid, he turned to sculpture in 1947, working mainly in steel and granite. Although his work has been recognized through a number of international awards and exhibitions, it has long remained little-known in Spain. His work often refers to his Basque culture. In 2000, a museum was opened in Hernani to perpetuate his legacy after his death in 2002.
