Bound in full burgundy morocco, double gilt fillet framing the boards, ornate ribbed spine, date 1857 at the tail of the spine, marbled paper endpapers, gilt head edges, early 20th century binding signed JM. PINAULT. in-16, on wove paper, Significant traces of oxidation on inner covers. First published in June 1857 by Poulet-Malassis and De Broise, this first edition of Les Fleurs du Mal was condemned two months later. The six poems concerned here are Les bijoux ; Le Léthé ; A celle qui est trop gaie ; Lesbos ; Femmes damnées ; Les métamorphoses du vampire . These first-edition copies differ in the following ways: on p. 31 and p. 108, the common title Les Fleurs du Mal is printed as "Les Feurs du Mal"; page 45 is numbered 44...
