Papal coins Pius II (1458-1464) Grosso - Munt. 12 AG RR Excellent quality specimen accompanied by beautiful iridescent patina. Top pop, best certified specimen NGC MS 63 cod. 2809904-006. The symbol noted on the reverse between the two saints belongs to the engraver and mintmaster Emiliano (or Miliano) Orfini. He was a true innovator of the engraving art of the period, moving decisively from the still medieval setting of the coin to one that was already Renaissance. One notices, for example, the particular spellings of the letters of the legend that would later be adopted by other mints in the Marche region. Therefore, this coin can ideally be placed side by side with the Renaissance portrait series, constituting a true milestone in the coinage of the transitional period from medieval to modern. - MS 63
