MENE Pierre-Jules (1810-1879) (After) "Levrette playing ball" Bronze proof with brown patina featuring a frightened dog with her ball, signed on the terrace. On a chased oval base. Unmarked early edition cast iron. Height : 14 cm x Width : 16 cm Bibliography: Pierre KJELLBERG, "Les Bronzes du XIXe siècle - Dictionnaire des sculpteurs", les éditions de l'Amateur, Paris 1987, pages 469 f. for a presentation of the artist. The Parisian sculptor soon specialized in small animal subjects, which were very popular with enthusiasts around 1850. Numerous editions of his work made him famous, particularly for his depictions of horses, foremost among them "L'Accolade". But Mène also knew how to render the endearing character of canines, like our young female greyhound.
