Invocation of Imam 'Ali, Munâjat al-Manzûma, Iran, late 19th - early 20th century. Album (muraqqa') of fifteen accordion-bound sheets of paper. Each sheet is calligraphed in Persian nasta'liq in black ink and illuminated in gold and polychrome on one side. The first fourteen are inscribed with four verses in cloud reserves on a gold background embellished with polychrome flowers, the cartouches framed with gilded vegetal decoration. The fifteenth leaf is divided into ten oblong calligraphic cartouches separated by red or green lines. Hardcover binding covered in beige velvet, with embossed decoration of a diamond-shaped medallion with two flowery appendages in the center, a fleuron in each spandrel and a broken line forming a border frame. Owner's stamp at the end of the manuscript. Binding size: 17.5 x 11.5 cm. Wear, folds, a few stains, one leaf misplaced in the mount. The calligraphic text in this album is a Shi'ite religious invocation commonly known as "Munâjat al-Manzûma", literally the "Rhythmic Invocation" attributed to Imam 'Ali ibn Abi Talib, cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad, fourth caliph of Islam and first Shi'ite imam.
