TABLEAU "COMPOSITION" by ZHANG HUA (1898-1970) Acrylic on canvas, signed lower right "Zhang Hua". Size: 90 x 60cm. Zhang Hua, painter and draughtsman born in southern China, died in Lyon. His career is close to that of artists such as Pan Yüliang, Sanyu and Tang Haiwen. Zhang's training focused on his aesthetic sense, with an emphasis on painting and calligraphy. After a stay in Strasbourg in 1937, Zhang settled in Paris, in the Montparnasse district. He lived on rue Vercingétorix, an area where artists' studios created a strong community. He met Pan Yüliang and Sanyu at La grande chaumière, and Zao Wou-Ki, whom he visited regularly at his studio in the 1960s. He forged ties with the great names of the Paris School: Van Dongen, Chagall, Braque, Kikoïne, Bissière, Tal Coat and Foujita.
