Third edition of Pierre Fauchard's major work, first published in 1728. The illustration consists of 42 plates. Le chirurgien dentiste is the first text devoted to the art of dentistry, laying the foundations for the development of a new branch of medicine. In addition to a detailed description of dental anatomy, Fauchard's three-part work covers dental diseases, treatments, surgical instruments, prostheses and surgical techniques. In an edict dating from 1699, Louis XIV created a body of dental experts in addition to those of physicians and surgeons. However, the profession remained anecdotal until the 19th century: by 1787, there were just twenty or so.
