Very fine ISPAHAN SEÏRAFIAN rug (Iran), mid-20th century Density of 12x12 knots per cm2, i.e. approx. 14,000 knots per dm2 Dimensions: 160 x 106cm. Technical features: Wool velvet on silk foundation. The ivory field features a wealthy nobleman, poet or philosopher, seated in the lotus position on a royal throne in the midst of a garden delicately planted with trees and flowers. Surrounded by two of his servants, he faces a captivated audience who, like him, are tasting a red apple, a symbol of beauty and good health. This must be the festival of "Sizdah Bedar", the thirteenth day of Norouz (the Persian New Year), when people counter bad luck by picnicking outdoors. Two navy counter-borders with small garlands of multicolored florets frame the main ivory border, decorated with deer and birds frolicking amid delicate floral scrolls. Signature in the lower kilim framed by the colors of the Iranian flag.
