Henry Sauvaire (1831 - 1896) (Amateur photographer active in the Middle East from the 1860s to the 80s, student of Gustave Le Gray) Album: View of Jerusalem and its surroundings, circa 1865 37.5 x 48.5cm Note: - Album comprising 43 albumen prints from paper negatives, mounted on cardboard, titled in pencil on cardboard, including a panorama composed of 3 prints and an etching from a photograph. - Born in Marseille, Henry Sauvaire took up photography in 1859, then moved to Beirut, where he became Chancellor of the French Consulate, having previously served as Consul in Alexandria and Jerusalem. His friend Camille Rogier, orientalist painter and director of the French Post Office, influenced his career through a number of photographic collaborations. Sauvaire, a true scientific photographer, wanted to show the strategic importance of the Karak Fort and the architectural design of the buildings, linking them to their geographical environment. Sauvaire, one of the pioneers of "scientific photography" applied to archaeology, gave a masterly demonstration of the value of Christian military constructions in Palestine.
