Description

Zdanevich, Kirill M. Untitled. (Scenographic sketch, dance scene). Gouache on paper (sheet from a sketchbook). Signed lower left: "C. Zdanevitch". Probably 1920s. Subject dimensions: 21 x 14.5 cm. Sheet dimensions: 19.5 x 14.5 cm. Kirill Zdanevich (1892-1969) was a long-time supporter of the artistic avant-garde, not only as an active "rebel" in Russia, but also in his native Georgia and in France, where the artist was probably most intensively involved with new trends. After his artistic training in Tbilisi and later in Moscow and Petersburg, he worked as a painter and illustrator with important artists such as V. Tatlin, N. Goncharova and M. Larionov, poets such as A. Kruchenyh and I. Terent'ev, and discovered the painter N. Pirosmani. Ten years in a penal camp following a denunciation interrupted the work of the artist, who lived in Moscow and Tbilisi. Later rehabilitated, the artist resumed the connections he had established in 1913-1914 with Paris and his brother Il'ya. Major international museums own works by the artist. - Paper slightly browned, upper margin with 2 small tears and smaller brown stains in the margin after detachment from the original stapling.
