Description

Klinger, Max. Untitled. (Portrait). Pencil and opaque white on wove paper. Inscribed lower left "München Okt: 19 S. L. Mr. O. F. - M. K." Sheet dimensions: 27.5 x 20 cm. The portrait sketch, which is only fully worked out in the face, possibly depicts the Bielefeld book and art dealer Otto Fischer (1879-1927), who was active on the board of the "Kunstverein für Bielefeld und Umgebung" from 1902 and published the "Bielefelder Kunstblatt". Parallel to his activities at the Kunstverein, he opened an art salon that was to shape the city's art life, the Kunstverein's exhibition program and ultimately the private and public art collections in Bielefeld for decades. Fischer presented works by Max Klinger, Käthe Kollwitz, Max Liebermann, Otto Modersohn and Edvard Munch here for the first time. - The sheet mounted on card along the verso, somewhat browned and with foxing, small pinholes in the corners.
