Gothein, Werner. Untitled. (Harbor with boats). Pastel chalk on firm chamois-colored paper. Verso with estate stamp and signed by Dr. Dietrich Gothein. Sheet dimensions: 39.5 x 52 cm. Werner Gothein (1890-1968), German artist who, fascinated by the works of Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, joined the institute "Moderner Unterricht in Malerei", which Kirchner and Max Pechstein had founded in Berlin, in 1912. Gothein's works were removed from a large number of German museums and collections as part of the National Socialist "Degenerate Art" campaign. - Mounted on support in places in the upper margin and under passepartout, somewhat rubbed overall, the corners and edges stronger, with small pressure points in places and somewhat stained on the verso and with residue from an old mount.
