High-quality miniature replica after the original from antiquity. "The sculpture from antiquity, which can be seen as the Atlante Farnese in the museum in Naples, was found in Rome in the 16th century and remained in the possession of the Farnese family for a long time. Descriptions and attempts to date this sculpture appeared as early as the 17th century. According to the latest research (determined from the intersection of the ecliptic and celestial equator with the existing constellations), it can be dated to the reign of Antonius Pius (around 150 AD). The celestial globe shows the state of knowledge of Ptolemy's Almagest." Cf. literature: Rudolf Schmidt, Himmelsgloben - Imagination und Beobachtung, from "Die Welt in Händen", Staatsbibliothek Preußischer Kulturbesitz Berlin 1989. A rare model of the famous statue of the Atlante Farnese. Naples/Italy c. 1880, patinated bronze figure signed "Chiurazzi Napoli", . Height c. 33 cm. - The famous Chiurazzi Foundry was established by the sculptor J. Chiurazzi in Naples around 1870. He specialized in fine quality reproductions of excavated classical sculpture. - "The original marble statue was discovered in Rome in 1575, and came into the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, and today rests in the Museo Archeologico in Naples. The date of the sculpture is not known, but the representation of the vernal equinox is similar to that in Ptolemy's Almagest, dating from 150 A.D., and it can therefore be assumed to have been carved soon after this date."
