Text volumes in the first octavo edition, published in the same year as the quarto edition, with the rare atlas volume. - Sabin 38420 - Ferguson 308 - Du Rietz 697 - Henze III, 101 - Deals with the search for the navigator J.F. de la Pérouse commissioned by the French National Assembly in 1791 under the leadership of A.R.J. de Bruny d'Entrecasteaux. The expedition sailed around Australia, northern New Guinea, Solomon Island, Tongo and New Caledonia. The work of the French naturalist LaBillardière is particularly important because of his thorough descriptions of Tasmania and the islands of Polynesia. - The plates show animals and plants, natives, utensils, views, dance scenes etc. - Text browned, atlas somewhat foxed and fingerstained in margins, large Chinese stamp on title and verso of last plate.
