Description

Liber amicorum - For my friends. Family book of C(arl) S(amuel) G(ottlob) Zander from Brandenburg/Havel. With title rocaille in gray and red pen, 8 (7 mounted) inked silhouettes (1 with the owner's profile, 2 under accordion paper cuts), 1 embroidered wreath, 1 quodlibet in pen and brush, 1 landscape gouache, 3 ink vignettes and 8 watercolors of flowers, landscapes etc. City and state of Brandenburg, Berlin, Halle, Dessau and Schnepfenthal, 1782-90, also Walchow near Fehrbellin, 1811/19. 152 fol., 1 (instead of ?) fol. index. With 215 entries. 12 x 18 cm. Contemporary leather binding with gilt-stamped initials and date 1782 as well as remnants of cover borders (heavily rubbed, spine and joints restored, rear free endpaper replaced, in modern slipcase). According to the enclosed excerpt from the church register, Zander was baptized in 1763 in Brandenburg/Havel with the above-mentioned first names, which correspond to his initials; his parents were the brewer Samuel Zander and his wife Marie Elisabeth, née Wiesecke. Both were registered on 2.IV.1782 together with the brothers of the family bookkeeper. Zander studied theology in Halle from 1782-84, from where around 60 entries were made, mostly by fellow students of "Gottesgelahrtheit". In 1789, ten friends registered at the Dessau Philanthropin, including the pedagogue and philosopher Jean Jacques Dutoit, the pedagogue Johann Michael Friedrich Schulze, Franz Heinrich von Knigge from Hanover, Heinrich Ernst Graf von Reichenbach and one von Dorimond from Mitau, the latter expressly "in the Philanthropin" (sic). A further ten entries were made in Schnepfenthal in the first days of January 1790, first and foremost Carl Gottfried Salzmann and Johann Matthäus Bechstein. - Numerous entries come from Zander's home town and the surrounding area (Dechtow, Katerbow, Netzband, Damme, etc.), the three latest from Walchow, where Zander apparently later worked as a preacher. - Old page numbering interrupted several times by old replaced or removed leaves, only the first leaf of the register still present. - Fingerstaining, partly loosened, the landscape gouache with rubbing and lead white oxidation, one of the two paper cut-out covers somewhat damaged.
