Description

Circus - Circus Herzog. Composite volume with 104 posters and large program slips for a guest performance in Munich. Munich, October 4 - November 27, 1887. Printed on different colored papers; a few posters with woodcut illustrations. Each folded. Half cloth of the time (42 x 32 cm). The founder and operator Heinrich Herzog (1827-1893) began his career at the Circus Wollschäger, then joined Ernst Renz and became self-employed in 1871 (see Saltarino, Artisten-Lexikon, p. 87). - The anthology documents his entire stay in Munich. Beginning with the announcement of the Circus's arrival on October 4, followed by the poster for the gala opening and ending with the "Brilliant Farewell Performance" on November 28. The last page is the "Farewell greeting dedicated to the Circus Herzog on its departure from Munich on November 28, 1887 by Johann Druckmüller", a witty poem by the alleged bearer of the note. - The beautiful posters, mostly followed by large program slips, show the variety of performances in which many of the most important European artists of the time took part; numerous members of the Renz family are particularly noticeable in the cast lists. - The volume comes from the collection of Duke Max in Bavaria (1808-1888), a lifelong admirer and patron of the circus and artist world. - A very good copy of this anthology, which is probably unique in its completeness. - Few (1 larger) marginal tears.
