Dedié au très sincère et très veridique Frère profane Leonard Gabanon Auteur du Catechisme des Francs-Maçons. Dessiné par Madame la Marquise *** et Gravé par Mademoiselle****. Set of 7 copper plates with legend. Without place and printer, around 1775. Mounted on paper folds in passepartouts. Sheet size: 22.5 x 33.5 cm. Rare edition in laterally inverted engravings of the Paris edition, ca. 1744, which J. M. Bernigeroth also used as a model for his laterally identical engravings in `Les coutumes des Francs-Maçons dans leurs assemblées. Neu und aufrichtig entdeckte Gebräuche der Freymäurer, nach dem in Deutschland noch nie gesehenen Französischen Original' (Leipzig 1745). - Wolfstieg II, 34506 (note) - cf. Kloss 1854 - was, like the original edition (unlike the edition by Bernigeroth), published without a title page. Wolfstieg describes numerous uses of the set in various formats and notes "the size of the plates is different in the various copies". The present set with plate size: 32.5 x 21.6-21.9 cm. - Leonard Gabanon is the pseudonym for Louis Traverol (1698-1783, violonist at the Paris Opera), who published 'Le catéchisme des Francs-Maçons' in 1744. - Plate 2 with engraved signature in lower margin: "Dessiné par Mad. la Marquise" and "Gravé par Mlle de T". - Partially slightly stained, small marginal tears in places. Plates 2 and 7 with water stain verso, plate 2 with professionally restored tear, plate 5 with 2 small ink stains in the center, plate 6 with faint brown stains ibid. VAT: #
