Judaica - Riesser, Gabriel. Collected Writings. 4 volumes. With engraved frontispiece portrait. Published on behalf of the Committee of the Riesser Foundation by Meyer Isler. Frankfurt a.M. and Leipzig, Riesser Foundation and Volckmar, 1867-1868. 20.5 x 13.5 cm. New half leather binding with gilt-stamped spine title. First edition of the only edition of his works. - Fürst III, 157 - Volume 1 with a biography of Riesser by M. Isler and excerpts from his letters. - The publicist and jurist Gabriel Riesser "one of the leading constitutional politicians of the German revolution" and "courageous and energetic champion of Jewish emancipation ... earned himself a great reputation throughout Germany." (NDB XXI, 609). - Gabriel Riesser (1806-1863) grew up in Hamburg in a religious Jewish family. He received his doctorate in Heidelberg at the time of the Restoration, when discrimination against Jews reached new heights. Two universities refused him his habilitation, and his home city of Hamburg refused to employ him as a lawyer. Riesser then grew into the role of a civil rights activist and became famous as a result. In 1848, Christian voters elected him to the Paulskirche Assembly. In 1860, he became the first Jewish judge in Germany. His diverse, rhetorically brilliant writings reflect the culture of the Vormärz and the development of German parliamentarianism. - Some brown spotting in places, title partly stamped several times, volume 2 with several stamps in the text.
