Description

AUBUSSON Tapestry "La Pucelle ou la France délivrée" from the hanging "Les Scènes de la vie de Jeanne d'Arc" after Claude VIGNON (1593-1670 ), 2nd half of the 17th century H : 2.93 m W : 2.80 m Joan of Arc, on the right of the composition, relieves the King of France wearing an ermine-trimmed cloak, symbolizing France's emergence from its chains. The theme "La Pucelle ou la France délivrée" is carried by an angel. In the background, a green expanse of water. A flowery border. "La Pucelle ou la France délivrée" is based on a lost drawing by Claude Vignon, engraved by Abraham Bosse (1604-1676). It was inspired by the heroic poem recounting the life of Joan of Arc by Jean Chapelain in 1656, written in twelve chapters and dedicated to the Duc de Longueville, the latter's patron. Several tapestries of identical design by the Aubusson manufactory are known: Two similar tapestries have been in the Joan of Arc Museum in Orléans (Inv. 76.51.003) since 1873, along with other episodes from the hanging: Joan of Arc in Chinon, La Prise des Tourelles, Le Sacre de Charles VII, Le Comte de Dunois en costume d'apparat, Joan of Arc en pied tenant son étendard, Le Comte de Dunois prisonnier sous les murs de Paris, Joan of Arc en armure antique from a later-acquired Sarthe château. A tapestry in the Château d'Espanel sold in 1879. Another in the Duclos collection in Rouen in 1916, whose whereabouts are unknown. It was probably one of these tapestries that went on sale on June 10, 2012, lot 132 SVV Rouillac. Very good condition, tapestry restored, original border. M or J. Chapelain. Musée Jeanne d'Arc and Musée de la Peinture in Orléans. Paola Pacht Bassani and A. Schnapper.
