Description

Surroundings tapestry decorated with a country love scene. Manufacture Royale d'Aubusson. In the taste of Jean-Baptiste HUET (1745-1811). 18th century - circa 1770-1780. Woven in wool and silk. H. 2.47 x L.1.40 m In Alentours tapestries, a central scene is set against a plain or damask-like background, usually decorated with garlands of flowers, medallions and attributes. The tapestry has preserved its beautiful colors and is borderless, which may be its origin, as this was the period when borderless tapestries began to be woven for insertion in woodwork frames. This alentour tapestry features a medallion motif held in place by a ribbon at the top, depicting a country love scene with two figures, a restless dog and an overturned jug. The medallion is edged with oak leaves, and the surround is decorated with garlands of garlanded flowers and a basket with a hanging bouquet of flowers. It is in good overall condition, with some areas of wear, notably in the silks, and old restorations.
