Description

Mantelpiece clock "à la naissance du Duc de Bordeaux" in finely chased bronze, gilded with matte and burnished; the movement surmounted by two doves pecking at each other in the form of a terminal with a bas-relief base. Quadrangular base featuring Rousseau teaching boys; feet decorated with pelicans feeding their young. The enameled annular dial with guilloché center shows the hours in Roman numerals. Charles X period. (Crack to the rear bezel). H. 46 - L. 34 - D. 13.5 cm Reference: This clock is extensively documented in the January 1986 issue of L'Estampille magazine, p. 46. This clock represents Marie-Caroline, Duchess of Berry. She is breast-feeding young Prince Henry, born on September 29, 1820, symbolizing maternity. The Duc de Bordeaux became the Comte de Chambord, pretender to the French crown from 1844 until his death in 1883.
