JAPAN - EDO period (1603 - 1868), EARLY 19th century Koma Kansai II (1767-1835) Gold nashiji lacquer bunko (document box) decorated in hira and taka maki-e in gold, silver and red lacquer with a rooster and hen on the lid and flowers inside. Signed Kansai. Dim. 15 x 40 x 31 cm. Wooden box The Koma family line of lacquerers was founded by Koma Kyui (1600-1663). They were appointed Goyo Makie Shi (Shogun-appointed lacquerer) by the shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu. Koma Kansai II was the master of lacquer artist Shibata Zeshin.
