Germany - Berlin Douzette, Louis City view by moonlight. 1918. Oil on canvas. 56 x 71.5 cm. Signed and dated. With an old label on the stretcher verso, typographically inscribed "K.O. 773". Framed. - Isolated slight color abrasion along edges as trace of framing. Partial craquelure. Firniss somewhat yellowed. No retouching visible under UV. Overall good. Atmospheric night landscape of a town by the river with late Romantic influences. The German painter Louis Douzette initially trained under Hermann Eschke in Berlin, becoming a member of the Verein der Berliner Künstler in 1863. A trip to Paris in 1878, where Douzette was greatly influenced by the Barbizon school and plenary painting, was influential in shaping his style. Douzette had connections to the Ahrenshoop artists' colony and a professorship at the academy in Berlin. Stylistically, he was inclined towards a realism associated with nature, but there are also decisive influences of Romanticism in the sense of an experience and perception of nature that supports the mood. Douzette's preference was for night paintings by moonlight, which earned him the nickname "Moonlight Douzette". Oil on canvas. Signed and dated.
