German - 19th century View of the Berlin Zoological Garden with ape house. Circa 1844. Gouache, dotted with charcoal, on firm paper. 18.2 x 25.5 cm. Laminated over the entire surface on support, signed "Elsner" there. Mounted under passepartout. - In the upper area of the image and sporadically in the center with punctual color abrasion, very slight surface soiling and rubbing. Partially the colors somewhat yellowed due to age. Small retouches visible in places under UV. Overall very good, the colors fresh and vivid. Detailed view of the monkey house newly opened in the 19th century. Extremely charming and detailed scene showing the hustle and bustle of visitors around the ape house of the Berlin Zoological Garden on a summer's day. Stylistically, the work, in which the artist impressively demonstrates his talent in the depiction of the trees and bushes along the edges, can be classified as Romanticism. The moment depicted is idyllic, at peace with itself, showing people's fascination with primates and their everyday, strolling activities. A peacock can also be seen in the foreground and flamingos in the right background. A part of Berlin's city history is depicted, urban daily life and the special features of the recently opened zoo are emphasized. The zoo was only established in 1841 at the insistence of zoologist Martin Hinrich Lichtenstein and with the funding and patronage of King Friedrich Wilhelm IV. Parts of the grounds of the existing pheasantry were used for this purpose. The Berlin Zoo was the 9th zoo in Europe and Lichtenstein was its first director. The ape house was one of the centerpieces and consisted of a rotunda and a heatable stone house. As early as 1844, it housed 24 different species of primates. Gouache, isolated with charcoal, on firm paper. Fully mounted to underlying mat, there signed "Elsner". Presented in mat. - Isolated color abrasion, slight surface soiling and -abrasions in upper depiction area and isolated in the centre. Partially the colors slightly yellowed due to age.
