Botany 2 design studies with depictions of Damask roses. 1st half of the 17th century. Each watercolor, heightened with white in spots, on laid paper. Sheet dimensions approx. 14 x 9.8 cm each. Each inscribed with the numbers "55" (?) and "60" respectively. 1 work verso inscribed in pencil by an unknown hand with work details. Each mounted in spots on support and under passepartout. - Margins somewhat frayed and sporadically with barely noticeable marginal tears (the longest approx. 0.1 cm). Paper browned and somewhat soiled due to age. Occasional light stains and studio marks, also on verso. Overall very good. Splendid drawing in fresh and brilliant colors, showing the Damascus roses in decorative close-ups from various perspectives. The two studies are presumably designs for wallpapers that were to be made according to the designs. The views show the Damascus roses decoratively designed in vibrant fuchsia from various perspectives, while the drawings also testify to botanical meticulousness and precision. Damask roses had been extremely popular in Europe since the Middle Ages and were considered the most sought-after type of rose. They were cultivated in selected gardens of rulers, kings and monasteries. Given the exclusive significance of the Damask rose and the elaborate and painstaking preparatory work, the wallpaper in question must have been an extremely luxurious product.
