Southeast Asia Klier, et al, Philip Adolphe Collection of 4 large-format OPhotographs with images from Myanmar, Indonesia and Sri Lanka. Circa 1880. albumen prints. Dimensions mostly approx. 20.5 x 27 cm. Each firmly mounted on support (of which 2 prints on 1 card, recto and verso). Inscribed in manuscript on each, 1 image with additional inscription imprinted. Shown is: Photo of an elephant with a mahout on the animal's back in a teak garden in Rangoon (Yangon), Burma (Myanmar), taken by Philip Adolphe Klier (cf. The British Library, 88120). - View of the two stratovolcanoes Gede, Salak and Pangrango on Java. - Nuwara Eliya (Ceylon). - The German self-taught photographer Philip Adolph Klier emigrated to Burma at a young age during the British colonial period. There he created numerous portraits and photographs, the motifs of which mainly adorned postcards for sale to foreign visitors. His photographs are now part of many public archives such as the British Library and are considered important documents for the history of photography in present-day Myanmar. - Partly with occasional pale brown stains, the mounting somewhat worn through in places.
